During our recent visits to the communities around Mole National Park, we had the privilege of meeting Baba Osman, a truly remarkable individual who embodies resilience and dedication. Baba Osman, believed to be over 90 years old, has spent his entire life farming approximately 10 acres of land, cultivating crops such as cassava, water yam, and maize. His passion for agriculture is unmistakable, and his understanding of the delicate balance between farming and wildlife conservation is profound.
Despite his unwavering commitment, Baba Osman faces significant challenges. Elephants, a majestic yet destructive presence near Mole National Park, frequently invade his farm, threatening his livelihood. To safeguard his crops, Baba Osman spends countless nights sleeping on his farm and dedicates nearly every waking hour to its protection. His presence has become a critical defense against wildlife incursions, a reality that underscores his relentless determination and resilience.
Baba Osman’s story reflects the broader struggle faced by countless farmers living near protected areas. These hardworking individuals must navigate the difficult intersection of sustaining their families through farming and preserving the wildlife that shares their environment. It is a complex challenge that requires innovative solutions and collaborative efforts.
At EcoEmpower Alliance, we are deeply committed to supporting farmers like Baba Osman.
